Abstract
Gynecologists in hospital and practice are confronted daily with vaginal mycoses. The microscopic and cultural diagnosis is generally — if certain rules are observed — easy to learn. These measures should be a matter of course for gynecologists in order to continue to relate to the clinical case and to avoid the risk of therapeutic polypragmatism. Mycological seminars for gynecologists serve the demand for better qualifications. It is, however, unbearable that a competent physician is measured in Germany by the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung on the basis of the statistically calculated “mean value” of all his diagnostically active colleagues. If he infringes such “guide-lines” he is asked to attend a disciplinary hearing “where these measures are centered on the remarkable differences in the knowledge of the investigating physicians in the field of mycology” (Klehr 1986).
