Abstract

Colorectal liver metastases have aroused ever increasing interest over the past 30 years. This is due to a number of factors. Firstly, better understanding of surgical anatomy and the limits of hepatic resection, accompanied by better anaesthetic and postoperative support, has enabled far more extensive procedures to be undertaken with decreasing morbidity and mortality. Secondly, new cytotoxic drugs have become available and been given by a variety of routes both alone and as multiple regimens. Finally, technological advances in diagnostic modalities and drug-delivery mechanisms have enabled earlier diagnosis and the implementation of more sophisticated treatments.
