Abstract

Radical surgery as initial treatment has been abandoned or questioned in most institutions in favor of a radio-chemotherapy approach, followed or not by surgery. The use of radiosensitizers such as 5-FU and mitomycin C during the first days of radiotherapy has been demonstrated as effective. Today the main problem consists in defining the most efficient protocol of radiotherapy able to give the highest chance of both tumor control and anal preservation.
