Part of the book series: Topics in Current Physics ((TCPHY,volume 44))

Abstract

This chapter introduces the general concepts of persistent spectral hole-burning and summarizes the significance of this phenomenon for science and possible applications. The history of hole-burning is reviewed, and general classes of mechanisms leading to persistent spectral hole-burning are outlined in tabular form. A synopsis of the other chapters in the book is presented.
