Abstract
It is shown that membranes in plenty of water, if they have certain properties, should assume one of three configurations in thermodynamic equilibrium: A lattice of passages (i.e. connections), a single big vesicle, or many small vesicles. The choice is controlled by the ratio of the elastic modulus of Gaussian curvature and the bending rigidity. The necessary membrane properties are specified and a few practical examples are given.
