Abstract

The absence of viable pollen or of normal anther differentiation and development and microsporogenesis or faulty anther dehiscence are the main characteristic features of mst plants. Such features introduce alterations in anther biochemistry, physiology and function. Thus, compared to mft anthers, reduced carbohydrate and protein content and a lower metabolic activity due to either absence or deficiency of some enzymes have often been found in mst anthers. Based on the observed differences in nucleic acid content, isoenzyme pattern, protein content and quality, and amino acid composition (aminogram), various causes leading to mst have been proposed from time to time. Whether these biochemical differences are causes or consequences of mst gene action is not known. In most of the cases, such differences appear as consequences rather than causes. These are discussed individually in the following.
