Abstract

Recently developed methods of classifying errors in psychological terms have been applied to ergonomics(e.g., Reason, 1977). Langan-Fox and Empson (1985) applied the technique of error auditing in the setting of air traffic control. This paper summarizes their findings and assesses the implications for improving safety in air traffic control, in the contexts of training, maintenance of standards, and improvement of the working environment. Other potential uses for the technique will also be assessed.
