Abstract
Severe infections and sepsis are a deadly threat. The defense response involves nearly all organ systems [6, 12, 33]. All reserves are mobilized; the necessary adaptation and readjustment reactions cause a considerable increase in the metabolic rate [8, 21]. O2 consumption is consequently increased.
