Abstract

Using jellium and pseudopotential models, it is possible to make realisticcalculations of the properties of small metal clusters. For simple metals, it is found that the electronic energy is a large fraction of the total energy of a cluster and can be dominant in determining the cluster size. Experimental mass abundance spectra show discontinuities which can be attributed to shell structure in the electronic energy levels.
