Abstract

Much methodological progress has been made in recent years in the diagnosis of acute and chronic pancreatitis. However, two things which have yet to be established are a simple assay for the early stages of chronic pancreatitis, and an adequate parameter to act as reliable marker for severity and prognosis at the beginning of acute pancreatitis. Recently some non-enzyme proteins occurring in pancreatic juice or pancreatic cells were described as showing a strong increase or decrease in cases of pancreatic disease, which would make them possible candidates to serve as markers.
