Abstract

Although evolution has produced a general state of resistance to ‘non-self’ in plants, more than 90% of plant taxa in fact form compatible root associations, mycorrhizae, with certain soil fungi; these are no doubt the most frequent examples of susceptibility in plants to fungi. In endomycorrhizae, which concern most plant species, host-fungus interactions are structurally complex as there is development of an important intracellular biotrophic phase where cellular relationships are functionally compatible. This usually leads to bidirectional nutrient exchange between the two partners and highly beneficial effects on plant growth [1,2].
