Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NATO ASI F,volume 23))

Summary

This paper deals with the use of computers in the evaluation of learning with a special concern for diagnostic evaluation carried out with a formative aim.

The described methodological framework for diagnostic evaluation is both oriented to produce highly individualized tests providing a detailed measure of students’ achievements and to minimize the workload imposed by the test. The methodology relies on a hierarchical model of the subject matter but can apply to more general representations too. In fact, some network models can be converted to hierarchies if considered from a specific point of view.

The methodology is supported by Delfi, a computer system which assists authors in designing and implementing computer delivered diagnostic tests. It is a form of computer-aided design of educational material in which some phases are carried out by authors assisted by Delfi and other ones are fully automated. Some simple, yet significant examples are provided.
