Sampling is understood to be the taking of samples from a material in order to obtain information about the composition of the total amount in respect of one or more attributes, such as metal content, ash content, moisture, particle size, particle shape etc. The sample is a portion of the total material under consideration and is always resorted to in the investigation of the attributes, whenever a complete, ie. 100% examination of the total material is not possible, be it for economic reasons, when the method required for the investigation of large total amounts cannot be justified or when the product is destroyed during the analysis and can no longer be used.
