Abstract
Chloroplasts of higher plants are enclosed by a pair of closely spaced bilayer membranes called the envelope. The outer membrane of the pair is in contact with the cell cytoplasm, whereas the inner membrane bounds the stroma. In addition to its structural role, the envelope mediates a number of important chloroplast functions. It regulates the flow of ions and metabolites between the stroma and the cell cytoplasm (Heber and Heldt 1981). It is also involved in various aspects of chloroplast biogenesis (Cline and Keegstra 1983; Chua and Schmidt 1979; Douce and Joyard 1979; Ellis 1983; Roughan and Slack 1982).
