Abstract

Only properly functioning modern equipment will offer the anaesthesiologist security during his daily work. By providing active homeostatic monitoring during anaesthesia and surgical procedures it enables us to protect the patient from the effects of surgical trauma. Although the task of the anaesthesiologist and the variety of equipment available are meant to assist in bringing the patient through the operative phase in as good a condition as possible, they can at the same time form a threat to him (electrocution, burns, explosions). Apart from “human errors” technical malfunctions are beginning to play an increasingly important role in patient safety. We are of the opinion that at the present time the safety of the patient in the operating-theatre is in part dependent upon the proper functioning of the equipment serviced by expert technicians, and this plus adequate apparatus selection will result in a decrease in the frequency of human error.
