In kontinuierlichen Systemen sind die Zustandsvariablen stetige Funktionen der Zeit. Der Systemzustand ist bekannt, wenn zu jeder Zeit die Werte für die Systemvariablen angegeben werden können, d.h. wenn x = F(t) bekannt ist.
