Abstract

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a neoplastic disease of the hematopoietic system that results from a mutation in a single pluripotential stem cell. The abnormal stem cell receives a growth advantage, while for unknown reasons the proliferation of regular hematopoiesis is inhibited. Excessive and unrestrained growth of blood progenitor cells leads to an accumulation of mature and immature cells in the peripheral blood and to clinical manifestations due to organ infiltrations by extramedullar hematopoiesis.
