Argon and Its Companions

Abstract

The title of this introductory chapter was taken from the article of Ramsay and Travers [1.11 published more than eighty years ago. In this marvellous article, complete with colour photos of their spectra, argon and its companions are called the inactive gases. Nowadays, the Group VIII elements of the periodic table are variously referred to as inert, rare, or noble. But they are neither inert since they form important compounds [1.2], nor rare; the earth’s atmosphere contains about 1017 kg or argon. There was no consensus for a name even amongst the codiscoverers of these elements, Travers [1.3] entitled his book “Discovery of the Rare Gases”.
