Zusammenfassung
Bereits Hippokrates beschrieb das Perikardium als eine weiche, das Herz umschließende Hülle, die eine urinähnliche Flüssigkeit enthält. Über die Bedeutung und die Funktion dieser Hülle sind in den letzten 300 Jahren stark differierende Meinungen zum Ausdruck gebracht worden (Spodick 1970). Da das angeborene Fehlen des Perikards oder der Zustand nach operativer Dekortikation nicht mit einer wesentlichen Einschränkung der kardialen Pumpleistung einhergeht (Moore U. Shumacker 1953), ist es nicht verwunderlich, daß dem Perikard eine geringe funktioneile Bedeutung zugeschrieben wird. Andererseits gibt es Überlegungen, daß das Bild der kardialen Dekompensation zu einem großen Teil Ausdruck einer perikardialen Konstriktion, zumindest im Sinne einer diastolischen Dehnungslimitierung ist (Holt 1970; Shabetai et al. 1979).
