Abstract

The “soliton” paradigm [1] by now has a long list of applications to quasi-1-dimensional condensed matter systems. Important examples are polymers and charge-transfer chains (both synthetic and biological). These represent some of the nicest cases of soliton consequences for structural, energetic and transport properties. A material in this class which has received intensive theoretical and experimental study is polyacetylene, (CH)X, synthesized as a film which can be doped to remarkably high conductivity levels [2].
