Abstract

Since the discovery of the phenomenon of Surface — Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) there has been considerable research[1] as to the nature and universality of the enhancement process. Although the controversy concerning the total sources of the enhancement is still not settled, most agree that solely electromagnetic effects must play a contributing role. Our recent research, therefore, has made an effort to determine the magnitude of the electromagnetic contribution to SERS. At the same time we are investigating other optical processes which can be enhanced by properly structuring a surface.
