Abstract
An extensive retrospective study by the German-Austrian-Swiss Research Group (DÖSAK) on maxillofacial tumors (Fries et al. 1979) revealed the 5-year survival rate for oral carcinoma of all TNM categories to be less than 50%. For T3NX tumors survival time was 9–17 months. These unsatisfactory results indicate the necessity for new therapeutic techniques.
