Als intracelluläre Parasiten verlangen die Chlamydien Zellen, in die sie eindringen können. Sie können deshalb weder in Kultur- noch in Nährmedien gezüchtet werden; ihr Nachweis ist in lebenden Zellen möglich oder indirekt durch serologische Methoden.
