Abstract

Interest in the development of hybrid wheat, Triticum aestivum L; was stimulated by several events which occurred soon after World War II. Corn yields rose dramatically in the United States largely as a result of improved hybrids;hybrid sorghum was rapidly and successfully developed; Japanese scientists observed cytoplasmic male sterility in wheat for the first time (Kihara 1951; Fukasawa 1953); and then a different source of cytoplasmic sterility and male-fertility restoration was found in the United States (Wilson and Ross 1962; Schmidt et al. 1962). These latter discoveries formed the foundation for two decades of intensive research and developmental work aimed at the development of hybrid wheats.
