Abstract
Transfer RNA methyltransferases, which by methylating tRNA at a macromolecular level contribute to species and organ specificity, have been found to show greater activity in tumor tissue than in the corresponding normal adult tissue (Borek and Kerr 1972). It is possible that changes in the cellular content of tRNA methylases play a significant role in the development and growth of tumors. The differences in the degree of modifications of tRNA may be due to intrinsic differences in the specificity of tumor tRNA methylases, or may be the result of more simple factors inhibiting or stimulating the enzyme systems (Borek and Kerr 1972; Kaye and Leboy 1968; Pegg 1971).
