Sphincteroplasty Using Autologous Smooth Muscle

  • Conference paper
Book cover Colo-rectal Surgery

Abstract

Autologous large-intestinal muscle, which is obtained in large quantities in abdominoperineal rectum resections, is suitable for creating a continent colostomy. In contrast to highly differentiated skeletal muscle, smooth muscle has great energy economy and is able to maintain a continuous state of contraction for long periods of time. Smooth muscle is trophically undifferentiated and does not atrophy after denervation. Anatomically, the internal anal sphincter is the direct continuation of rectal circular muscle. The puborectal sling also possesses smooth muscle components.
