Abstract

We shall start our discussions with a brief review of the classical theory of phase equilibrium, developed by Gibbs and his successors. This theory, an inalienable part of physics and physical chemistry, is treated in many books (see, e.g., [2.1–4]). For the convenience of the reader, we give here a brief account of the basic principles that will be needed later.
