Effect of Undernutrition Upon Hair Growth

  • Conference paper

Abstract

Nutritionists are interested in hair growth because hair changes are useful early indicators of protein-calorie malnutrition. Because disease can disturb protein synthesis in hair, even though hair is not specifically involved in a particular condition, nutritionists are also curious whether disturbances in protein synthesis in other organs are the cause of general symptoms in, for example, the gut, the endocrine system and the central nervous system (Sims 1967).
