Dynamics of 4fElectrons in Mixed Valence Compounds

Abstract

The 4f shells of rare-earth atoms have a radius which is extraordinarily small for a partially filled shell [1]. As is indicated in Fig.l, the 4f orbitals are localized within the Xenon core of the atoms and have a radius that is 4 to 5 times smaller than the atomic radius.
