Abstract
This talk reviews what has been learned about nearly one-dimensional (1-D) systems, and in particular about the growth of long-range order in such systems, using thermal neutron probes. We discuss in turn
-
i)
structural transformations coupled to electronic charge density wave (CDW) instabilities, i.e. Peierls transformations;
-
ii)
transformations induced by coupling of 1-D ion (or mass) density waves.
