Osmoregulation in Birds

Part of the book series: Zoophysiology ((ZOOPHYSIOLOGY,volume 12))

Abstract

The ions of Na and Cl are the major electrolytes of plasma and extracellular fluids, and constitute together with those of K and NH4 the major fraction of osmolality of ureteral urine. The subject of osmoregulation, or osmotic and volume regulation, can be defined as the turnover and homeostasis of these ions and water.
