Investigation of Structural Phase Transformations by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

  • Chapter
Structural Phase Transitions I

Part of the book series: Topics in Current Physics ((TCPHY,volume 23))

Abstract

Inelastic scattering of neutrons, as compared to X-ray scattering, is a young technique which has been practiced for a little more than 20 years. Phenomena associated with phase transformations were studied with X-rays long before thermal neutron sources of sufficient flux for inelastic neutron scattering became available. Superstructures related to multiples of the original unit cell and pretransitional effects such as diffuse scattering around possible superstructure Bragg points have been observed. Similarly, phase transitions were studied where the volume of the unit cell remains unchanged, as is the case for proper ferroelectrics.
