Abstract

Cancer is one of the most feared diseases occurring in man and claims the lives of millions of people every year. It is a disease for which there is as yet no known cure, possibly because the basic cause of cancer is not known. Cairns (1975) has estimated that about 80% of the cancers arising in man are caused by environmental agents and he has suggested that one of the most expedient ways to reduce the cancer problem would be to identify the environmental agents which are carcinogenic and to eliminate these agents from man’s environment.
