Abstract
Illegitimate recombination, generating gross chromosomal rearrangements and gene transfer to different chromosomes or organisms, is a major theme of this colloquium. It is not known whether this process is in certain ways related to general genetic recombination. Both general and illegitimate recombination are ubiquitous in nature, and formal analysis reveals remarkable similarities in eukaryotes and prokaryotes, suggesting that the underlying mechanisms for both kinds of recombination are also similar. To expose differences and possible similarities (if there are any) in these two processes, I want to discuss present knowledge and thoughts about the mechanism of general recombination.
