Abstract

Although the importance of biological nitrogen fixation in the nitrogen cycle is well established, it is recognised that a considerable increase in nitrogen input into crops will be necessary to satisfy dietary needs in future decades. There is therefore considerable interest at present in furthering our knowledge of nitrogen fixation at the molecular level. The ability to convert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia is limited to a wide range of prokaryotic organisms, some of which can associate with higher plants to form efficient symbiotic associations. This review, however, will be primarily concerned with the free-living nitrogen-fixing bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae since the biochemistry and genetics of nitrogen fixation have been extensively studied in this organism.
