The Presence and Expression of Herpes Simplex Virus DNA in Transformed Cells

Abstract

Studies of papova and adenoviruses have led to the identification of the viral DNA sequences which are involved in the transformation of cultured cells by these groups of viruses (1–6, and reviewed in 7). These viral DNA sequences have been shown to be stably incorporated into the transformed cell genome (8–9). Their presence in transformed cells has been correlated with their transcription into RNA (10–13), as well as with the expression of identifiable, viral specific, transformation antigens (reviewed in 7, 14, 15). More recent research has been aimed at elucidating the nature of the specific host and viral DNA sites involved in the integration event (16–19).
