Abstract

Adamantinoma of the appendicular skeleton is a rare but relatively distinctive primary bone neoplasm. This lesion was first described by Fischer (1913). He was responsible for naming this long bone neoplasm adamantinoma. It was so named because of its close histologic resemblance to the benign, but potentially locally invasive, tumor of the mandible or maxilla, also called adamantinoma. This is a true neoplasm of enameltype tissue which does not undergo differentiation to the point of enamel formation and is the classical adamantinoma of the jaw. Interestingly enough, aside from a close histologic resemblance, adamantinoma of long bones parallels certain clinical and many roentgenologic characteristics of the classical adamantinoma of the jaw. As it relates to long bones, however, the term ameloblastoma conveys incorrect meaning since it indicates a tumor composed of or originating from, the embryonal enamel forming cells. Enamel has never been found in these tumors. Adamantinoma is even more misleading since it indicates a tumor consisting of enamel.
