Neutrophil and Macrophage Colony Formation by Normal Cells

  • Chapter
Hemopoietic Colonies

Abstract

This section will discuss mainly the formation by mouse cells of neutrophilic granulocytic and macrophage colonies, the first cloning system developed and the one about which most is known. Formation of granulocytic colonies by normal human cells will also be described. Techniques have been developed for obtaining comparable colony formation by monkey, dog, rat, rabbit, hamster, cat, and chicken marrow cells, but these will not be discussed in detail. For convenience hereafter “neutrophilic granulocytes” will be referred to simply as “granulocytes.” Formation of eosinophilic colonies will be discussed in Chapter 8.
