Abstract
The present section serves as an introduction to Chapter 6 and Part II. This part is devoted to the Lagrangian point of view, whose importance in the relativistic theories of materials was felt especially towards 1960, that is in the years when people attached in various ways the problem of constructing more or less general theories of elasticity in general relativity. Therefore the historical hints to be considered in this section—some of which were briefly given in § 13—will mainly concern relativistic theories of elasticity.
