Abstract

The scope of research activity encompassed by the title of this chapter is enormous, and includes, for example, magnons in metals, alloys, and ionic compounds, critical phenomena, crystal field levels, magnon-phonon interactions, magnetic excitons and excitations in spin glasses and amorphous magnets, each of which rightly deserves a chapter to itself. In the space available to us here we attempt only to illustrate the usefulness of neutron scattering in the study of some dynamic effects of current interest, and the areas from which we have chosen examples are prescribed largely by our competence. Moreover, for each area of activity included, we shall in general, concentrate on one, or perhaps two particular cases. We shall consider only one example of a mixed magnetic system; useful reviews of inelastic neutron scattering measurements on mixed magnetic systems have been given by COWLEY and BUYERS (1972), and ELLIOTT et al. (1974). These few words should portend the very restricted nature of our discussion of inelastic magnetic neutron scattering.
