Molecular Rotations and Diffusion in Solids, in Particular Hydrogen in Metals

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Topics in Current Physics ((TCPHY,volume 3))

Abstract

This chapter deals mainly with problems related to physical chemistry; namely, Sec.5.1 with diffusion in solids, in particular of hydrogen in metals, Sec.5.2 with rotational motions of hydrogeneous molecules in crystals, and Sec.5.3 with rotation and diffusion in liquids and in liquid crystals. A common aspect in these problems is that such motions are responsible for energy transfers which are small compared to kBT, or to the Debye energy kBθ, and typical neutron spectra to be discussed appear in energy ranges of a few 10−6 to a few 10−3 eV, or 10−5 to 10−2cm−1. We restrict ourselves essentially to the discussion of scattering from the protons which is predominantly incoherent (σinc = 79.7 barns; σcoh = 1.79 barns). This means that we deal only with the motions, or excitations, of individual protons or protonic groups, ignoring collective excitations and interference.
