Abstract
The purpose of this review will be to present sufficient of the background information about the structure of muscle, as well as some details of recent work, so that a non-specialist can form a reasonably-coherent picture of the present state of our knowledge, of the problems which have to be solved, and of some of the current lines of experimentation.
