Microfilaments in Blood Platelets

Blood platelets or thrombocytes are formed by fragmentation of the cytoplasm of the megakaryocyte and therefore contain no nucleus. Nevertheless they are equipped with a wide variety of subcellular structures: mitochondria, at least two types of storage organelles, and two internal membrane systems, called “closed” and “open”, the latter representing invaginations of the plasma membrane which penetrate deeply into the cytoplasm. A particularly prominent intracellular element is the microtubules, which circle the equatorial circumference of the cell in close vicinity of the inner surface of the plasma membrane. It is generally assumed that the microtubules act as a “cytoskeleton” and are responsible for the disc-shape of the circulating, “resting” platelet.
