Abstract
A. The membrane theory of excitation and propagation, Over the past 70 years there has been an accumulation of data on excitable membrane systems leading to the formulation of the “membrane theory of excitation”. The membrane theory of today is much different from, but based on, that of Bernstein (1902). No attempt will be made to trace the development of the membrane theory to its present form since Cole (1968) has already done so. Rather I will present the salient points of the theory together with the major supporting evidence. For more complete documentation of these points, reference should be made to reviews by Hodgkin (1951, 1958, 1964) and Cole (1968).
