Abstract
As discussed in Chapter 5, biological membranes tend to be more permeable to cations than anions and, further, fine discriminations are made by the membrane between various cations and anions. The high cation permeability of most plasma membranes, coupled with demonstrated net negative fixed charge within the membrane (c.f. Chapter 5), raises the question of whether these two phenomena are linked.
