Abstract
In respect to chromosome pairing, two situations may be distinguished: non-competitive pairing, in which only two possible partners are available, and competitive pairing, where more than two potential partners are available, but where nevertheless only two at a time can finally pair sufficiently effectively to form a chiasma. This introduces an element of choice. The aspects of interest in non-competitive pairing are the number and location of the points of pairing initiation, and the synaptic extent. In competitive pairing, these same aspects are considered in addition to pairing preferences, reflecting pairing differentiation.
