Scientific Applications of Liquid Crystals

  • Chapter

Abstract

Liquid crystals are excellent solvents for organic molecules. Non-mesomorphic guest molecules may be incorporated in liquid crystals up to fairly high concentrations without destruction of the.distant order prevailing in the liquid crystalline matrix. The guest molecules couple to the anisotropic intermolecular interaction field of the oriented host but can diffuse rather freely within the solvent. The anisotropic guest-host interaction leads to a highly anisotropic tumbling motion of nonspherical guest molecules within the liquid crystal matrix. In the time average this anisotropic tumbling leads to an appreciable orientation of the guest with respect to the axis of preferred solvent alignment. The liquid crystalline solutions can be oriented homogeneously by electric, magnetic or mechanical forces, that is bulk samples of highly oriented solute molecules can be easily prepared.
