Abstract

The biomass of microorganisms is a small component of most ecosystems, but is of fundamental importance in regulating ecosystem function. In terrestrial ecosystems, the greater proportion of primary production passes directly through the decomposer chain (Goksøyr, this section), while in some aquatic systems 90% passes through the herbivores (Petrusewicz and Macfadyen, 1970; Satchell, 1974).
