Abstract

The notion of a “spatial hierarchy” of biological organization has already been alluded to in Chap. 2. It is a paradigm (KUHN, 1970) of wide influence (LEAKS, 1969) which may be stated as follows: 1. there exists hierarchical continuity between successive integrative levels of biological organization, and 2. there are central organizing principles to be discovered (NEEDHAM, 1968).
