Order-Disorder Transformations in Alloys

Part of the book series: Reine und angewandte Metallkunde in Einzeldarstellungen ((METALLKUNDE,volume 24))

Abstract

Short-range order has been investigated up to the present in many solid solutions of metals, carbides and oxides. The degree, the sign and the type of short-range order are related to the short-range and long-range atomic interactions and depend on the nature, concentration, temperature of the solid solution and the history of the specimen. The results of investigations of short-range ordering upon annealing after prior treatments such as plastic deformation or quenching show that the short-range order parameters often change non-monotonically and that the state obtained even after prolonged annealing at rather high temperatures is not quite in equilibrium. These data indicate that a non-homogeneous short-range local order exists and that the micro-structure of a solid solution depends upon the interaction energy as well as upon kinetic factors.
